My Nanny here recently has been struggling with her kidney levels being where they are suppose to be! So naturally, I found foods that can help her! When you love to snack like us, food is great medicine! When you prefer natural alternatives over medications like me, food is a great healer!

Our kidneys are like unsung heroes for the body, quietly and efficiently filtering waste products and excess fluids from our blood. To keep these crucial organs in top shape, incorporating certain foods into our diet can make a significant difference. Whether you’re looking to improve your kidney function like I am for Nanny or just maintain overall health, here are some kidney-friendly additions to your daily meals.

1. Water
First and foremost, staying well-hydrated is key to kidney health. Water helps the kidneys clear sodium and toxins from the body. Aim for at least 8–10 glasses a day, but remember, the exact amount can vary depending on your body's needs and activity level.

2. Berries
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and cranberries are not only delicious but also packed with antioxidants and nutrients that support kidney health. They’re low in potassium and phosphorus, which is ideal for kidney diets.

3. Fatty Fish
Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties. These fats are beneficial for kidney health, as they may reduce fat levels in the blood and slightly lower blood pressure.

4. Leafy Greens
Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are loaded with vitamins and minerals. However, they’re also high in potassium, so moderation is key. For those with advanced kidney issues, it’s wise to consult a healthcare provider regarding the intake of these vegetables.

5. Apples and Pears
These fruits are high in fiber and anti-inflammatory properties, making them great for kidney health. Plus, they’re a sweet way to satisfy your cravings without overloading on sugar. My Nanny loves for us to make homemade apple sauce! It’s her favorite way to get her apple intake! Just dice up your apple, peeled and cored of course, and place in a pan with a touch of water. Mix on low heat till the apples get soft enough to mash and enjoy! Add cinnamon or honey for more health boosts!

6. Garlic and Onions
These kitchen staples do more than add flavor to your dishes; they have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They’re also a great way to reduce salt intake, which is beneficial for kidneys.

7. Olive Oil
Olive oil is a great source of oleic acid, an anti-inflammatory fatty acid. Using it for cooking or in salad dressings can be beneficial for kidney health, thanks to its healthy fats. Research the health benefits of taking olive oil and which one to use! Do not just go and grab any jug of oil off the shelf and start drinking it!

8. Egg Whites
Egg whites provide a kidney-friendly source of protein. Unlike red meat, they’re low in phosphorus, making them a great protein option for people mindful of their kidney health. Nanny was thrilled to hear this one because she loves boiled eggs!

9. Cauliflower
This vegetable is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s high in vitamin C, folate, and fiber, and can be a great substitute for higher-potassium potatoes.

10. Bell Peppers: A Colorful Kidney Ally
Low in potassium and high in flavor, bell peppers are great for the kidneys. They’re also an excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants.

Taking care of your kidneys through diet is a proactive step towards overall health. These foods not only support kidney function but also contribute to a more nutritious diet.
