You Need These in Your Kitchen! The Kitchen Appliances You Didn’t Know You Needed!

When it comes to setting up your kitchen, there are the obvious essentials like ovens, fridges, and toasters. But beyond these basics, our world has built an entire list of innovative and surprisingly useful cooking appliances that can elevate your kitchen experience. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a home cook, these lesser-known gadgets are sure to make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable and efficient. As a busy bonus mom, I know we are all looking for more ways to make life easier!

1. Immersion Blender: Also known as a hand blender, this tool is a game-changer for making soups, sauces, and smoothies. It allows you to blend directly in the pot or bowl, reducing cleanup and simplifying the cooking process. We don’t always want to drag out the blender set from under the counter! This conveniently fits in a drawer and weighs nothing!

2. Digital Food Scale: For precise cooking and baking, a digital food scale is a must. It ensures accurate measurements, which is especially crucial for baking recipes where precision is key to the perfect outcome. If you are joining the sourdough era, you’ll want one of these!

3. Rice Cooker: A rice cooker might seem like a luxury, but it’s incredibly useful. It cooks rice perfectly every time and can also be used for quinoa, oatmeal, and even steaming vegetables.

4. Sous Vide Machine: This appliance is for those who love precision cooking. Sous vide machines cook food in a water bath at a consistent temperature, resulting in perfectly cooked meats and vegetables every time. One of my favorite recipes is getting my vacuum seal bags, putting pork chops, butter, spices, and raspberry vinaigrette all together, sealing it up, and letting it cook for a few hours! Absolutely delicious!

5. Pressure Cooker: A pressure cooker dramatically reduces cooking times for slow-cooked dishes like stews and braises. It’s a lifesaver for busy days when you still want a home-cooked meal. Especially this winter season when we are craving those comfort meals!

6. Food Processor: While it’s somewhat known, many don’t realize the full potential of a food processor. It can chop, shred, slice, and even knead dough, making it a versatile tool in the kitchen. I would be lost without mine!

7. Induction Cooktop: An induction cooktop is a sleek, energy-efficient alternative to traditional gas or electric stoves. It heats pots and pans directly, reducing heat loss and cooking food more efficiently.

8. Electric Kettle with Temperature Control: For tea and coffee enthusiasts, an electric kettle with adjustable temperature settings is essential. It allows you to heat water to the precise temperature needed for different types of tea and coffee.

9. Air Fryer: An air fryer is a healthy alternative to deep frying, using hot air to cook food. It’s perfect for making crispy fries, chicken wings, and other fried favorites with less oil.

10. Cast Iron Skillet: A cast iron skillet isn’t a high-tech gadget, but it’s an indispensable tool in the kitchen. It’s perfect for searing, frying, baking, and more, and it lasts a lifetime.

11. Herb Scissors: Herb scissors are a simple yet effective tool for quickly chopping fresh herbs. They have multiple blades and can cut herbs into uniform pieces, saving time and effort.

12. Vacuum Sealer: For those who like to meal prep or buy in bulk, a vacuum sealer is a great investment. It helps preserve the freshness of food, extending its shelf life significantly. I buy all my meats in bulk (it is way cheaper then small portions) so my vacuum sealer gets used all the time for all my meats, vegetables, and more!

13. Meal Planning Binder: My meal planning binder has over 500 family dinner ideas for all seven days of the week, lunch ideas fro kids, lunch ideas for your husband, quick substitute dinner ideas for when life happens and you need a quick fix, and a meal planner template! All a digital download that you can print out, laminate, and use day after day to make cooking easy! Dinner at home can be enjoyable again!

While traditional kitchen appliances are undoubtedly important, these lesser-known gadgets can significantly enhance your cooking experience. From saving time to ensuring perfection, each of these tools has a unique role to play in the modern kitchen. Whether you’re a professional chef or a busy mom who simply enjoys cooking at home but needs more time, consider adding these appliances to your kitchen arsenal.

Natural Cough Drop Recipe: Safe for all Ages

Did you know that earlier this year the FDA came out and ruled out almost 70% of all cold, flu, and cough medications? Most of our medications are just placebos. They put enough active ingredients in our medications to make us notice a slight difference so we keep taking said medication but it actually isn’t doing anything to help us at all. Another tactic big pharma uses to get us to spend money and ingest unnecessary ingredients.

This startling revelation by the FDA has left many of us, especially parents, in a dilemma. When over-the-counter medications are no longer reliable or deemed safe, what alternatives do we have for treating common, constant issues like coughs and colds? The answer is natural medications! Our ancestors lived longer than us and were never sick. They didn’t always have pharmacies around.

Natural cough drops are great for any age and safe for any age. Now obviously don't give them to children who don’t understand the concept of cough drops therefore causing a choking hazard. But there are no safety hazards ingredient-wise for this recipe. Here’s how you can make your own natural cough drops at home, ensuring that your family gets a remedy that’s both safe and effective.

Ingredients and Their Benefits

  1. Honey: A natural cough suppressant, honey has antibacterial properties and can soothe a sore throat.
    2. Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can help in relieving congestion and soothing an irritated throat.
    3. Lemon Juice: High in Vitamin C, lemon juice boosts the immune system and has natural antiviral and antibacterial properties.
    4. Herbs (like mint or thyme): These herbs act as natural expectorants, helping to loosen mucus and ease congestion.
    5. Cinnamon or Cloves: Both spices are known for their antimicrobial properties and add flavor to the cough drops.

Equipment Needed

Saucepan
Candy thermometer
Silicone candy molds or parchment paper
Spoon or spatula

Recipe for Homemade Natural Cough Drops

1. Preparation:
— In a saucepan, combine one cup of honey, a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, the juice of one lemon, and a teaspoon of your chosen herb (mint or thyme).
— If desired, add a half teaspoon of cinnamon or a few cloves for extra flavor and benefits.

2. Cooking the Mixture:
— Heat the mixture over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Use the candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.
— Keep stirring the mixture until it reaches 300°F (the hard-crack stage). This process might take about 20 minutes.

3. Setting the Cough Drops:
— Once the mixture reaches the right temperature, carefully pour it into silicone candy molds or onto a parchment paper-lined tray.
— If using a tray, score the mixture with a knife to create a grid, making it easier to break into small pieces once cooled.

4. Cooling and Storage:
— Allow the cough drops to cool completely. If you used a tray, break the hardened mixture along the scored lines.
— Store the cough drops in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Whether you’re hosting a large family gathering or simply want to wow the hubby for dinner, here is a recipe for you!

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole beef roast (about 4–5 pounds)
    - 2 cups of bread crumbs
    - 1 cup of finely chopped mushrooms
    - 1/2 cup of finely chopped onions
    - 2 cloves of garlic, minced
    - 1/2 cup of chopped fresh parsley
    - 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
    - 2 eggs, beaten
    - Salt and pepper to taste
    - 2 tablespoons of olive oil
    - 1/2 cup of red wine
    - 2 cups of beef broth

Cooking Materials:

Large roasting pan
Skillet
Mixing bowl
Kitchen twine
Meat thermometer

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Stuffing:
In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic until translucent. Add mushrooms and cook until tender. Transfer to a mixing bowl and let it cool. Stir in bread crumbs, parsley, Parmesan, beaten eggs, salt, and pepper.

2. Prepare the Roast:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lay the roast flat on your workspace. Spread the stuffing evenly over the roast, leaving a small border around the edges. Carefully roll up the roast and tie it securely with kitchen twine.

3. Cook the Roast:
In the roasting pan, place the tied roast and pour beef broth and red wine around it. Season the outside of the roast with salt and pepper. Insert the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the roast.

4. Roasting Time:
Roast in the preheated oven for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the meat thermometer reads 145°F (63°C) for medium-rare. Baste the roast occasionally with the pan juices.

5. Rest and Serve:
Once cooked, remove the roast from the oven and let it rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to be redistributed, ensuring the meat is succulent and flavorful.

A Coalminer and Stay-at-home-wife Raised Three World Renowned Brain Surgeons

True Story From the Hills of West Virginia

A coal miner and his stay-at-home wife raised three boys who all grew up to be brain surgeons! These brothers worked in the same hospital, flew to far-off states because they were so good at their jobs, won awards, and have big, happy families. How did two ordinary parents raise such successful kids? They didn't come from money. They weren't doctors themselves. So how did they do it?

One day, I got to ask their mom this question while she was having coffee with me in my store. I was really curious about how they raised such amazing sons. Her answer was simple: No screens.

"Back when I was raising my kids, cell phones weren't a big thing like they are now," she said. "But my oldest son was having a tough time in school. He felt so bad and kept asking why it was so hard for him when other kids did well. So, I decided to ask one of those kids' moms what her secret was. She simply told me this: no screens!”

That day, this mom decided to change things in her own home. She told her boys and her husband that they would only watch TV or movies on special occasions. "Of course, they didn't like it at first," she said. "But then, my boys knew not to argue because I was not about to budge. If they weren't playing outside, with each other, or helping us, they were reading books. They didn’t have TV, video games weren’t a big thing for that time, and the cell phones we know now didn’t exsist!

And look at them now! My boys grew up to be great brain surgeons, and their momma here is super proud of them. Now they always had a love for the medical field so I do think they would have gone off to study it, but I also fully believe that because of the limited distractions, they were able to go as far as they did.”

She thinks that reading a lot and not spending too much time on screens really helped them become who they are today. They were allowed to go to the library and pick any books they wanted. Eventually, those books became more educational and less for fun! They chose it and they built a beautiful life!

I always encourage my kids to read! Reading provides many sources of education no matter the contents. In this day and age it is beyond hard to keep screens out of a child’s life, but limitations should be encouraged! This story is example A-Z!

What do you think about this? Do you think less screen time and more reading can help kids do better in school and in life? Let me know in the comments! I want to hear opinions about this one!

Helping Our Children Find Future Jobs: Finding Work Online and How to Leverage AI

In today's fast-changing world full of new technology, we parents have a big job. We need to get our kids ready for the future. Even though I really believe in the value of hard, traditional jobs, I see that work is moving more towards the internet and AI (Artificial Intelligence). This means we need to teach our kids new ways to find jobs and use AI to help them be successful in that world!

I want my kids to know the value of hard work, physical effort! But I don’t want to see them having to live on Motrin in their late twenties an early thirties like their parents! I pray our oldest really does become an astraunaut like he dreams about, but just in case life doesn’t take him that way, I want him and his brothers to be ready for this AI world that is evolving around us.

Why Should Kids Learn About Online Work and AI?

1. Skills for the Future: Jobs in the future will need people who know about digital stuff and AI. Learning about these now will help kids in their future jobs. Even if they have a birck and mortor job, most companies are all digital in their paperwork now. They are going to have to know their way around a computer!

2. Work with the Whole World: Working online lets people have jobs with companies all over the world, not just close to home. It provides a job window for any and every job this big crazy world has to offer! He may not become a astruanunt, BUT he could virtually reach children about space! He could become a famous author and sell ebooks about it! He could write digital products and supplies or soace companies!

3. Be Flexible and Ready for Change: Online jobs can often be more flexible and need you to be ready for quick changes, which is important in today's fast-moving job world.

4. Think New and Creative: Understanding AI can help kids think of new ideas and be creative, which is really important in lots of different jobs. Creating products, research, rephrasing documents, paraphrasing documents, THE LIST IS ENDLESS!

5. Having the Time We Wish We Did: I do not know a single adult that doesn’t wish they didn’t have to schedule family time around a job. One who wishes they could just take off as needed, take vacations when they want, one that never has to miss a baseball game! Online work is a different realm! Online jobs offer more flexibility then we can imagine. Our kids could have the life we wish we did as they grew up!

How to Teach Kids to Find Work Online

1. Start with the Basics: Teach kids how to use the internet safely, how to behave online, and how to use different websites and apps. Teach them to use AI to help find them jobs. Chat GPT is amazing at fidning resources for job opportunities!

2. Learn Online: Encourage kids to take courses online to learn new skills like computer coding, how to market things online, or how to design websites. YouTube can also be referred to as YouTube Academy because it nothing but a source for any information you ever wish to learn! Medium.com is also a great source of education! I learned many tactics for blogging on there!

3. Freelancing and Short-Term Jobs: Show kids how they can find short-term jobs or projects online that fit what they're good at. Again, ChatGPT is amazing for this!

4. Create a Good Online Image: Help them make a professional online profile, like on LinkedIn, to show their skills and work experience. Many companies and jobs will ask for social accounts. Make sure their LinkedIn and Facebook are presentable!

Using AI for Better Careers

1. Understand AI: Teach kids what AI is, how it works, and how it's used in different kinds of jobs, from technology to health care. Learn AI tools and what each can be used for! It’s not just about writing articles for us and creating images.

2. Think Critically and Solve Problems: AI isn't just about computers; it's about thinking smartly and solving problems, which are really important skills. Did you know some people use AI to help them with therapy?

3. Use AI Responsibly: Talk about the right and wrong ways to use AI and why it's important to use technology in a good way. Think back to school: it is not okay to copy and paste WINK WINK.

4. Keep Learning: Since AI keeps changing, it's important to stay up-to-date with new things happening in the field.

Helping our kids learn about online work and AI isn't just getting them ready for any job; it's preparing them for successful and adaptable careers. As parents, it's our job to make sure they're not left behind in this exciting and changing world. No matter how much us old fashioned pen and paper we want to be, that’s not the world our children are growing up in.
